Clean Water: A Lifeline for People Living with Disabilities in Rural Communities

In many rural communities across Africa, the lack of access to clean water affects everyone—but for people living with disabilities, the challenges can be particularly overwhelming. The story of Devine from Bontibor, a village in the Nkwanta District of Ghana, shows the profound difference clean water can make in someone’s life.

Life Before Clean Water

Bontibor is home to around 1,700 people, but until recently, the village relied on a stream deep down in a valley as its main water source. For Devine, who is living with a disability, collecting water was not just a daily chore—it was an exhausting ordeal.

“Carrying water and climbing up the hills for several hours was my only option,” Devine shared. “I only have my nephew, Albert, who helps me when he can. But Albert also has to go to school, and often, fetching water made him late for class or forced him to miss early lessons entirely.”

For Devine and Albert, the lack of nearby water was not just an inconvenience; it disrupted their entire lives.

The Transformation

When Water for West Africa stepped in to build a well in Bontibor, everything changed. With clean water now available close to home, Devine no longer has to struggle to climb hills or sacrifice hours of his day to access water.

For people like Devine, access to clean water is more than just a basic necessity—it’s a lifeline. It restores dignity, eases physical and emotional burdens, and creates opportunities for a better future.

“Now, Albert can get to school on time,” Devine said with a smile. “And I don’t have to worry about him missing his education just to help me fetch water.”

Empowering Vulnerable Groups

Water for West Africa is committed to building wells in communities like Bontibor because we understand that clean water changes lives. For people living with disabilities, it means independence, improved health, and the ability to participate fully in their communities.

By bringing water closer to home, we’re not just saving time and energy—we’re empowering individuals like Devine and giving young people like Albert the chance to focus on their education and dreams.

Every well we build brings hope to communities in need. You can be part of this mission. Together, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has access to clean water and the opportunities it brings.
